Luke 1:26-38: No One Compares to Jesus

Luke 1:26-38: No One Compares to Jesus

Even by His very conception, Jesus proved that nothing is impossible within the will of God. His is the only virgin birth as a sign that He is pure and sovereign.  No one has ever come close to being as loving, tender, bold, brave, wise, fair, and sacrificial as Jesus Christ!

Jesus left a place more perfect than we can ever imagine to live in a sinful, primitive, violent world.  While we marvel at Jesus’ miraculous birth to a virgin, remember the story does not stop there. Jesus was born for the sole purpose of giving up His life thirty-three years later.  Jesus gave up His throne surrounded by angels for a life where His authority was rarely recognized.  He came to this cruel and heartless world in the form of pure innocence and humility.  He would willingly endure excruciating torture.  (The word excruciating exists because of the severe pain suffered during crucifixion.)  Yes, He also knew He would be raised from the dead three days after His death, but He did not endure long hours of agony just to glorify Himself.  He allowed Himself to be beaten raw and pierced through to die a slow death just for you and me! His blood on the cross is the only reason you and I have the option of spending eternity with Him in paradise.  He paid for our sins by hanging in humiliation on a cross with wood splinters buried into an already raw and bloodied back, a crown of literal thorns causing blood to burn his eyes as it dripped down His face.
It is His glorious face we must seek today! Do not throw away His precious gift bought with a terror we could never endure.  Repent of your sins and seek to live a life of holiness so that you can someday see the beautiful face of Jesus and His Father who allowed His son to be ripped from His side for more than three decades.
As you read through the book of Luke and of the shepherds marveling at the baby Jesus, think of how much more magnificent it will be to bow at the throne of the living God! Take a moment and thank Jesus with all your heart for choosing the path of pain and sorrow just so we can have an eternal life of peace and joy!

(Luke 1:26-38)  And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

And the angel came in unto her, and said, "Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women."

And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

And the angel said unto her, "Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end."

Then said Mary unto the angel, "How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?"

And the angel answered and said unto her, "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God... For with God nothing shall be impossible."

And Mary said, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. "

And the angel departed from her.

Luke 1:5-14, 39-41, 57, 67, & 76-80: Prepare the Way for the Lord

Luke 1:5-14, 39-41, 57, 67, & 76-80: Prepare the Way for the Lord

God answered the prayers of Zacharias and Elisabeth because of their faithful obedience to Him.  Not only did God gift them with a son, but He sent an angel to foretell of this special child's birth!  This son was so important to the Kingdom of God, he was filled with the Holy Spirit even in the womb, and his future ministry was prophesied in Isaiah 40:3, (The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, "Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.")

This child was John the Baptist and would prepare the way for Jesus Christ.  What an honor!  May we all prepare the hearts of others for the love of Jesus Christ.

(Luke 1:5-14, 39-41, 57, 67, & 76-80) There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course, According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense. And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

But the angel said unto him, "Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

And Mary [the mother of Jesus] arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost.

Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, "And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel."

Mark 13:3-8, 13-14, 21-27, & 32-37: "When shall these things be?"

Mark 13:3-8, 13-14, 21-27, & 32-37: "When shall these things be?"

(I will be posting more on this subject later, but in the meantime, see the end of this post for links on more writings about the timing of the rapture.)

Mark 13 speaks of Christ's return.  This chapter, as well as Matthew 24 and Luke 21 all make it very clear that it will be "after the tribulation."

**Fellow believers, please let's not divide on this issue. Prayerfully study God's Word and love one another whether you agree or disagree.**

The Bible gives instructions on what the Christians should do during the tribulation to stay safe.  Verse 14 says, "flee to the mountains." When you read Revelation 12:6, it also says we must flee to the wilderness to be safe.  If we follow God's instructions, we will be kept safe.  If we realize there is not a pre-tribulation rapture and prepare now, we can be safe during times even more perilous than we are seeing now (this will include storing food before the great famine comes mentioned in Revelation 6:5-6).

(Mark 13:3-8, 13-14, 21-27, & 32-37) And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, "Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled?"

And Jesus answering them began to say, "Take heed lest any man deceive you: For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains. And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not: For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things."

"But in those days, AFTER that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. AND THEN shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. AND THEN shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven. But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is. For the Son of Man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch."

Mark 6, 7, & 8: Faith and Understanding

Mark 6, 7, & 8: Faith and Understanding

In Mark chapter 6-8, you see the lack of faith and understanding in Jesus' disciples.

Mark 6:52 says, "For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened."  This, of course, is speaking of the miracle Jesus performed a few verses earlier in verses 33-44, where He fed 5,000 people with just five loaves and two fish.  Now, when they see Jesus walking on the water in verses 47-52, the disciples have already forgotten about His miraculous power.

Next, in chapter 7, Jesus is trying to teach the disciples that the dietary laws are not necessary because it is not what enters a man that defiles him.  He begins with a frustrated question that shows Him wondering why His own disciples who are with Him every day still cannot understand His teachings.

Again, in chapter 8, verses 17-21, Jesus is rebuking the disciples for their lack of faith and understanding.  He reminds them of both the previous miracle in Mark 7, and then a similar incident where He fed 4,000 (verses 1-9). When He tries to teach them that they must "beware of the leaven of the Pharisees," they mistakenly think He is talking about literal bread and not about sin.  Jesus asks them how they have "eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not?"  Don't they remember all the miracles they have seen thus far?  He must have been so frustrated with those that sat at His feet and still were not grasping His teachings. Mark 8:21 He asks, "How is it that ye do not understand?"

I truly believe Jesus says the same words to me.  How can I witness His mighty works, feel His love, and still not get it?  How do I still doubt?  How can I read the words of Christ and still sin?  It is so important that I pray for understanding for my every-day walk.  I want the gift of discernment so that I do not miss the point Jesus is trying to teach me.

I pray for wisdom and faith to grasp all I read in the Bible and when I feel the presence of God through prayers and praise.  I pray for remembrance lest I forget what He has already done! I do not want to be a forgetful thick-headed or hard-hearted disciple.

Change my heart, o God, that I may always both hear and understand all you are trying to teach me!

(Mark 6:37-38, 41-44 & 48-52) He answered and said unto them, "Give ye them to eat."

And they say unto Him, "Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat?"

He saith unto them, "How many loaves have ye? go and see."

And when they knew, they say, "Five, and two fishes."

And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, He looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. And they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men.

And He saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. But when they saw Him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out: For they all saw him, and were troubled.

And immediately He talked with them, and saith unto them, "Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid."

And He went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered. For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.

(Mark 7: 18-23) And He saith unto them, "Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him; Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?"

And he said, "That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man."

(Mark 8:2-9 & 14-21) "I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat: And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far."

And His disciples answered Him, "From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness. "

And He asked them, "How many loaves have ye?"

And they said, "Seven."

And He commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to His disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people. And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them. So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets. And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and He sent them away.

Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf. And He charged them, saying, "Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod."

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "It is because we have no bread."

And when Jesus knew it, He saith unto them, "Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened? Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up?"

They say unto him, "Twelve."

"And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up?"

 And they said, "Seven."

And He said unto them, "How is it that ye do not understand?"

Mark 4:1-20: The Parable of the Sower

Mark 4:1-20: The Parable of the Sower

This is my humble commentary of the “Parable of the Sower (see also Matthew 13:1-23).

This parable begins with, Behold, a sower went out to sow,and Jesus interprets this as, "The sower sows the word.  The sower may be a preacher that teaches people the Word of the Lord, or it could even be the Lord who gives us the wisdom.  Remember, in Jesus’ time, He was the people’s teacher, the Living Word of God, as the New Testament had yet to be written!  Either way you view it, the only way to have the Word sown in your heart is to read (or listen to) the Bible.  Having a preacher teach it is a great start but studying on your own and discovering what the Bible really says is always best as many ministers preach messages simply to tickle the ears of their congregation in order to get a bigger offering.  I always insist that none of my readers take my words for granted.  Do your own research.  Read the Bible daily and study all you read and pray for God’s clarity to reveal the Truth of His holy words.

Some seed falls by the wayside; and the birds devour it.  Another term for wayside is edge, so you may consider this the seed that plants itself only around the edges of your heart and does not work its way into the heart or mind.  Jesus tells the multitude that birds devour the seed but tells his disciples that the birds represent Satan.  Satan uses television, movies, social media, video games, sports, vanity, hobbies, and other people to keep us from studying the Word so that one never takes the time to cultivate the seed planted.  In a sense, all one is taught of the ways of holiness are devoured as they are forgotten and pushed aside for the pleasures of the world.

The seed that falls on stony ground springs up quickly as if one has accepted what they heard, and it begins to affect their way of thinking.  However, because the soil in their heart is stony, you may easily interpret this as hard-hearted.  The heart does not have much earth because the person is shallow and does not choose to dig deeper into the Word of God and takes everything someone else claims to be the truth as truth.  This person really is a surface-only believer and is not on fire for the things of the Lord.  This is most likely why, when the sun scorches the seed, it withers as it has no roots.  Jesus says these people immediately stumble when faced by trials.

Fear may be the opposite of faith, but do not let anyone tell you it is a sin.  Afterall, Jesus was so afraid of his upcoming crucifixion that he sweat blood (See Luke 22:44), and we all know Jesus was sinless.  So being afraid of life’s trials is acceptable, but we need to remember to do as Jesus did when he was terrified, pray to our Heavenly father for strength.

The thorns that choke the seed are not just the cares of the world that we choose to put above our Lord, but also the pleasures of the world we place as idols above the Lord.  Those that let the Word of the Lord be choked out, put everyone and everything else above time with Jesus.  The Bible, praying, and praise get placed on the back burner so one can watch television, play/socialize on the computer, go shopping, eat, exercise, work, spend time with friends, etc.  When we are not daily grounded in God’s promises, all the noise of the world chokes out God’s Truths.  I prefer the words of Jesus Christ over anything in the Bible, but when I am down, my next choice would be the Psalms.  In my devotional time this morning, I was reminded of Psalm 23 not only while I was reading the passage in my devotional, but also two songs came on my Kindle that were the words to Psalm 23 (it was on shuffle mode)!   That was no coincidence, especially since I have been dwelling on this same Psalm for several days now.  God wanted to remind me that He is my Good Shepherd, and I do not need to fear even in the scariest of valleys.  Surely, His goodness and mercy are my strength.  If I did not allow myself to dwell in scripture and feel very comforted by the words, my seeds could have been choked out by worry.

Jesus says the ones who let their seeds be choked out stumble and become unfruitful.  Yes, Christians can stumble and backslide, and even fully turn away and lose their salvation.  However, when one repents, and ONLY when one repents, the Lord will take his prodigal child back (see Luke 15:1-31).  Revelation 2:5 reminds us, “Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place--unless you repent.”  When we repent, Jesus will take us back!  So, even if we stumble, there is hope that our loving Father is quick to forgive the humble heart that asks for forgiveness.

As I just mentioned above, well, as Jesus mentions, when one allows his seed to be choked out, he becomes unfruitful.  What are the unfruitful works of the flesh listed in  Galatians 5:19-21 - Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,  idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Pay close attention to that list, it is a good reminder that when we fail to let God’s Word seep into the soil of our hearts, one is bound to pursue ungodly actions.  One more note (off the subject a bit, but I feel God wants me to remind you of this), notice the word “sorcery” up there?  Please, if you must watch movies or television, let go of watching all programs (and books) that glorify witchcraft, and therefore open the doors wide for Satan's influence in your life.  Notice also that habitual sins of the above will shut you out of the Kingdom of God.  Repentance of sins and discarding unholy ways are keys to having God’s seeds firmly planted in your heart and being fruitful.

Now, let’s go to the end of this parable and see that one who allows the seeds of God’s Word to become firmly planted will produce fruit in various levels.  These seeds are sown in good ground.  This means one who is open and receptive to the things of the Lord. One who is humble enough to admit wrong-doing and work at fleeing from a sinful lifestyle. One who is willing to be taught and eagerly sits at the feet of Jesus waiting to learn something new every day.  One who is not going to let the cares of a fallen world take away their love for their Heavenly Father.  No one is perfect, of course, we all make mistakes and do wrong things.  We all have fear and doubt.  But the answer lies in clinging to the seeds planted in your heart.  And clinging even more so to the Author of the Words.  Let Jesus be your comfort, your corrector, and your hope.  When you allow God to take control of your life, it will be much easier to produce good fruit.  listed in Galatians 5:22-26 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

People tend to leave out the part that says we must live in the Spirit and crucify our flesh.  Even these verses in Galatians (as well as in the above verses) show that grace is free, but sins are not automatically forgiven unless we repent.  1 John 1:9 says, IF WE CONFESS our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

We must put aside the unfruitful traits and pursue the fruits of the spirit.  Only then will the seeds in our hearts flourish and grow beautiful fruits.  Fruits that can feed and nurture others.

(Mark 4:1-20) And again He began to teach by the sea. And a great multitude was gathered to Him, so that He got into a boat and sat in it on the sea; and the whole multitude was on the land facing the sea. Then He taught them many things by parables, and said to them in His teaching: "Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow. And it happened, as he sowed, that some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds of the air came and devoured it. Some fell on stony ground, where it did not have much earth; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up it was scorched, and because it had no root it withered away. And some seed fell among thorns; and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no crop. But other seed fell on good ground and yielded a crop that sprang up, increased and produced: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred."

And He said to them, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear!" But when He was alone, those around Him with the twelve asked Him about the parable.

And He said to them, "To you it has been given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to those who are outside, all things come in parables, so that 'Seeing they may see and not perceive, And hearing they may hear and not understand; Lest they should turn, And their sins be forgiven them.' "And He said to them, "Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?  The sower sows the word. And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts. These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness; and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word's sake, immediately they stumble.  Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred."

Mark 1:22 & 27-28: Multitudes Followed Jesus

Mark 1:22 & 27-28: Multitudes Followed Jesus

Mark 1:28, states, "Immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee."

Jesus was followed by multitudes wherever He went. Some went for healings, while others went just to sit at His feet.

We can still go to Jesus for healings and to learn at His feet when we read His Holy Word.  We cannot physically see Him, but we can feel Him and even sometimes hear Him.

He left His Holy Spirit behind to guide us and listens to us from Him throne in Heaven.

If only the whole world would follow Jesus instead of politicians, rock stars, actors, and athletes, then they too could be healed and learn much by sitting at His feet!

(Mark 1:22 & 27-28) And they were astonished at his doctrine: for He taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.

And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth He even the unclean spirits, and they do obey Him."

And immediately His fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.

Matthew 26:39: Not as I will, but as Thou Wilt

Matthew 26:39: Not as I will, but as Thou Wilt

For more on this prayer you can read my blog, "The Prayers of Jesus Christ: Part 4" Here: https://thankful-julie.blogspot.com/2025/11/the-prayers-of-jesus-christ-part-4.html

When I pray to my heavenly Father, I hope to follow this humble attitude of Jesus.  To fall on my face and realize that God's will for my life is best.

Jesus knew what horrible painful things were about to happen to Him, but since He knew this was God's will, not only for Him, but for all humanity, He was able to surrender to His Father's will.

May I also have a submissive heart and the faith to trust God's plans for my life.

(Matthew 26:39) And he went a little farther, and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

Matthew 23:25-28: You Cannot Fool God

Matthew 23:25-28: You Cannot Fool God

In Matthew 23:25-28, Jesus paints a clear picture to the Pharisees that we cannot just appear to be living holy lives.  He calls them hypocrites because they preach to others about the man-made laws but are living unrighteous lives.

(Matthew 23:25-26) "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

Appearances and fancy words don't matter, and this applies to all of us that preach any kind of message to others.  Yes, it is important to try and teach others about the ways of Christ.  However, if we are not practicing what we preach, our words are meaningless before the Holy of Holies.

(Matthew 23:27-28) "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity."

Wow! Jesus really says it perfectly! If our lives are full of sin, we are nothing but a tomb full of rotting flesh.  We cannot fool God - He sees and knows all that is in our hearts and minds as well as all our actions we don't let others see.

Please, Lord, help me to always practice what I preach!

Matthew 20:26-28 & 23:10-12: Called to be Servants

Matthew 20:26-28 & 23:10-12: Called to be Servants

In Matthew 20:26-28 & 23:10-12, Jesus makes it clear that His disciples are called to be servants.  We are not to think of ourselves better than others.  Even if we hold a position of authority, we still must have a heart to serve the needs of our fellow humans.

Jesus is the greatest of all, and yet even He came to serve.  He washed the feet of His disciples to show His love and compassion for them.

Even the powerful and wealthy are called to serve the poor, they should not consider themselves too good to get their hands dirty.

We can serve in person or over a computer, with monetary gifts or with your time, and just as important, serve by praying for others.

(Matthew 20:26-28) But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

(Matthew 23:10-12) Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

Matthew 18:6-7: Will you stand against pedophilia?

Matthew 18:6-7: Will you stand against pedophilia?

I am going backwards from Matthew 21 to Matthew 18.  In
light of so much tragedy in the news lately, I feel I should repost this blog that uses Matthew 18 in the writing.

*This is a sensitive subject, but I did my best to be tasteful, but reader discretion is advised. *

In 2011, actor Corey Feldman declared to ABC News’ Nightline, “I can tell you that the No. 1 problem in Hollywood was and is and always will be pedophilia. That’s the biggest problem for children in this industry. … It’s the big secret.”

It is all over the Internet that Hollywood is full of pedophiles (which includes other rich and powerful people not directly connected to the entertainment industry such as political leaders). Why is this a surprise to anyone? Have you not been watching the movies and television shows full of underage girls dressed provocative and even simulating sex? Who do you think writes the scripts for these movies? Who do you think the adult actors are abusing the children all for the sake of entertainment? Yes, I meant "abusing." If these actions were not performed in front of a movie camera, they would be in jail for their actions! These children sometimes are seen kissing (or worse) adult actors. I’m not talking about the adult actors that look like teenagers, but actual minors under the age of 18; sometimes way under the age of 18!

No one has stood up for the children dressing and acting sexual and yet people are shocked that the adults coaching the kids to act in such a disturbing fashion are being revealed as pedophiles? Just because one has not gone to a secret island to harm a child does not mean he/she is innocent. How many shows have you seen where young girls (and even boys) are exploited all for the sake of selling movie tickets? The parents allowing their children to dress at least half naked and/or simulate sex acts, are not blameless. It is a parent’s job to protect their children from all kinds of harm including pedophiles. Do you really think those creeps stay away from the theatres and/or only watch shows with adult actors? Or do you think they specifically choose the movies with the oversexualized child actors?

Do you think these same people full of perversion are failing to leer at your proactively dressed child because they (or you) want to emulate Hollywood? I will say it again, parents need to protect their children, which includes making better choices on how they dress and act around adults! It is not as if all pedophiles have a large "P" on their forehead. You do not know who is happily titillated that you dressed your child in so little clothing! Or have him/her dancing to secular music and post the very adult movements all over social media. You know I am not talking about innocent kids' dances such as "I'm a Little Tea Pot." Kids 2 years and younger are paraded all over social media dancing to proactive song lyrics and imitating the sexual movements while the adults laugh. God is not laughing! In fact, He weeps for this loss of innocence. Make no mistake, all violators of children will be held accountable!

(Matthew 18:6-7) But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!

None of the writers, producers, or adult actors are blameless. How many do you think intentionally choose roles where they are paid to act with half naked children and maybe even get to hug and/or kiss that child? Neither are those who watch these shows blameless and perhaps need to do some serious repenting on their knees after he/she realizes he/she was also titillated. Be honest with yourselves now, God knows what is in your heart! Even if you are not so, but just watching makes you uncomfortable, then why keep watching?

(Philippians 4:8) Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Therefore, if the opposite is true, if it is not pure, TURN IT OFF!

Just because it is labeled as entertainment, or even put in cartoon form, that does not make it any less immoral than illegal child pornography or any less harmful to a child’s psyche than those not being paid to act and dress shamelessly on camera. Just because the children are part of the Hollywood system does not make them any less of a victim. They are coerced, brainwashed, and even given drugs and alcohol to act in lustful ways. This is not a conspiracy theory, but reality, do your research as I did and look it up. It has been a known fact for quite a long time that child actors are given alcohol/drugs and even expected to attend adult parties where they are violated by well-known adults. Just because they are famous it does not make it okay to wink and nod and turn a blind eye. God is no respecter of people, and He does not care who you are when you commit a heinous sin against anyone innocent.

What about movies that speak out against sex trafficking or other child abuse? Are they okay to watch because they expose secrets? Think about this: the young actors in these movies are very much exploited as they act out scenes the real children went through. Even if the movie does not show any child being sexually violated but shows (for example) a young girl being groomed for future unpardonable acts, these scenes should make you feel sick to watch. Think of how this makes the young people feel acting these roles out with adults shoving a camera in their face while they act out disturbing scenes and dialog? Don't you think the children know what the disturbing movie topics are about and how that must make them feel? Would you want to act out being a victim sexual violence using either dialog or actions? Using such a disturbing topic to make money is disgusting. Using a child to show child abuse is wrong and hypocritical as they are abusing the child actor. Telling a child to pretend they have been victimized is victimizing the child. Many child actors have come forward saying playing the victim of abuse traumatized them for years to where they had frequent nightmares and ended up taking drugs and eventually had to seek therapy. See again Philippians 4:8 above as well as consider this:

(Ephesians 5:11-12) And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

I will plead with you again, give up Hollywood! Even if you do not do it for Jesus' sake, do it for the sake of innocence being stolen from children. Movies and television shows are full of corrupt people intentionally harming children. Do you really need another reason to turn off the TV and quit buying movie tickets or streaming them over your Internet? What if it was your child being exploited? Would you still watch what you are watching? Would you watch it if Jesus was sitting beside you?

Matthew 21:21-22: Faith to move Mountains

Matthew 21:21-22: Faith to move Mountains

Notice that Jesus does NOT say, "I will give you whatever you want, no matter what."  It takes faith and not doubt.  We also must remember that, though God is gracious beyond measure, what we ask for must be within His perfect will in order for Him to answer our requests.

The best way to increase your faith is not to rely on your own strength, but to call upon the Power of God with prayer, praise, and bible study.

Do not be fooled into thinking that God only listens to people when they pray in large groups such as at a church service. Your prayers as an individual or with even one other person (such as your spouse) are just as powerful. (Matthew 18:20 -For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.)

If you are lacking faith, please still pray and talk to Jesus about the reasons for your lack of faith. Oftentimes The Holy Spirit can encourage you and help build your faith, thus increasing the power in your prayer life. I’m not just preaching to the choir; I often struggle in the area of faith, but God is gracious and only requires faith the size of a mustard seed. That’s great news not only for me, but for you as well.

Also remember that James 5:16 reminds us that those who chose to live lives according to the ways of Jesus Christ are more likely have their prayers answers, not just those who call on God when it is convenient. (James 5:16 The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.)

(Matthew 21:21-22) Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, "If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive."

Matthew 20 & 22: Many Are Called, But Few Are Chosen

Matthew 20 & 22: Many Are Called, But Few Are Chosen

Both Matthew 20:16 and 22:14 are both from parables about Heaven where Jesus says, "For many are called, but few are chosen."  We are all called to be children of God. He loves His creation and desires that none should perish (2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to REPENTANCE.) There is no mistaking that we are all called to follow Jesus by repenting of our sins and living lives for His glory alone.

The sad truth is, however, that only a few will answer the call.  Most will turn away and reject the Savior and refuse to follow Biblical principles.  Others will answer but fall away and not endure to the end. These people are represented as those called that were "not worthy" in Matthew 22:8 and also as the man who showed up to the wedding feast (Heaven) without a wedding garment in Matthew 22:12.

Being "chosen" means we have done our best to live holy lives pleasing unto the Lord until the day we leave this world. (Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.)  Only then will we be chosen to spend eternity with Christ.

(Matthew 20:1 & 15-16) For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.

"Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen."

(Matthew 22:8-14) Then saith He to his servants, "The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage."

So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.

And when the King came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment: And He saith unto him, "Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment?"

 And he was speechless.

Then said the King to the servants, "Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few are chosen."

Matthew 15: What Defiles a person?

Matthew 15: What Defiles a person?

In Matthew 15, Jesus again tries to teach the Pharisees that the traditions of men are hypocritical.

Rather than focusing on the conditions of their hearts, they worry what they eat.

He calls them "blind" because they fail to see that by creating their own laws, they demean God's ways.

Rather than saying more on this easy-to-understand subject, I will let the words of Jesus explain it so much better than I ever could in the below verses.

(Mattthew 15:7-20) [Jesus said,] "Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, 'This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.'"

And He called the multitude, and said unto them, "Hear, and understand: Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man."

Then came His disciples, and said unto him, "Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?"

But He answered and said, "Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch."

Then answered Peter and said unto Him, "Declare unto us this parable."

And Jesus said, "Are ye also yet without understanding? Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man."

Matthew 13:54-58: Because of Unbelief

Matthew 13:54-58: Because of Unbelief

In Matthew 13:58, it states, "And He did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief."  Because the countrymen of His own town of Nazareth refused to believe He was the Messiah, He chose to limit the miracles performed. It does not say He refused to help those that believed, just that He "did not many... works."

This really made me evaluate my faith and/or disbeliefs.  I never want to have Jesus say, "I do not want to perform mighty works for Julie because she doubts."  I do not want to rob my husband or myself of God's blessings. May I keep my faith elevated!

(Matthew 13:54-58) And when He was come into His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, "Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? Is not this the carpenter's son? is not His mother called Mary? and His brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? And His sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?" And they were offended in Him.

But Jesus said unto them, "A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house."

And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

Matthew 5:1-9 Blessed are the Humble, Meek, Merciful, & Peacemakers

Matthew 5:1-9 Blessed are the Humble, Meek, Merciful, & Peacemakers

As Jesus was referred to as "The Prince of Peace" even before His birth, I want to explore how I can be more like this desired personality trait.  However, rather than focus on the act of feeling peaceful, God has placed it on my heart to write about what it means to act as a peacemaker.

(Isaiah 9:6-7) For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
Whether bold or shy, we are all called to be peacemakers and to treat each other with kindness and respect.  In fact, there are so many scriptures on this subject, that I could not possibly list them all in one blog.  I will do my best to narrow it down.  Let's start with Christ's Sermon on the Mount.

We've probably all heard all or most of what are often referred to as "The Beatitudes" that are part of Jesus' Sermon on The Mount.  Here is a small part of it. Note how many of them have to do with having a gentle heart.  I used the amplified version because I love the way it explains each trait and type of blessing (all other verses used are KJV).  It is worth reading the entire chapter of Matthew and the verses I did not include.

(Matthew 5:1-9, AMP) When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and when He was seated, His disciples came to Him. Then He began to teach them, saying, “Blessed [spiritually prosperous, happy, to be admired] are the poor in spirit [those devoid of spiritual arrogance, those who regard themselves as insignificant]for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [both now and forever]... Blessed [inwardly peaceful, spiritually secure, worthy of respect] are the gentle [the kind-hearted, the sweet-spirited, the self-controlled], for they will inherit the earth... Blessed [content, sheltered by God’s promises] are the merciful, for they will receive mercy... Blessed [spiritually calm with life-joy in God’s favor] are the makers and maintainers of peace, for they will [express His character and] be called the sons of God."

Wouldn't it have been amazing to be at the feet of Jesus as He taught this sermon?  I am so very grateful to have the Bible and have access to the wisdom of Jesus and from the disciples who learned by His side.

One of the main themes of Christ was loving one another.  Some religions are so steeped in the Old Testament that they still believe in the "eye-for-an-eye" mentality, but I prefer to follow the advice of Jesus.  (This has to do with personal persecutions.  I am a firm believer in the justice system when people receive a fair trial and, when applicable, are properly punished for their crimes.)

(Matthew 5:38-39) "Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also."

By being called to be humble, meek, and peaceful we are also taught not to be quarrelsome and antagonistic.  There is definitely a time and a place to stand up for yourself and your beliefs, and I am proud of my husband for being such a person.  I am mostly referring to the people who refuse to respect others' beliefs to the point they become a troublemaker.

(2 Timothy 2:23-25) But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth.

(Proverbs 20:3) It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

How are we called to handle such a person?

(Titus 3:9-11) But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain. A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject; Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.

Yes, that means it is perfectly acceptable to limit time with or even eject such a person from your life if you have first warned him to quit being so argumentative.  We are called to live in peace, not to be doormats or be forced to have people in our lives who are always stirring up dissention.  People who always want to criticize and argue are not respecting who you are as a person and are not a genuine friend.

Jesus taught His own disciples that they were to leave the towns of the people who would not accept their teachings.  Rather than stay and argue, they were to leave that town and not return.  Jesus uses the symbolism of shaking the dust from their feet as if to say they are not to even take the town's negative attitude with them, but leave it behind in the dust.

(Matthew 10:14) "And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet."

Jesus was referred to as "The Prince of Peace," because His ultimate goal is to bring us a life of peace.  Peace to our hearts, minds, and lives.  He also wants us to be kind, loving, and gracious.  I realize I am repeating myself, but I am trying to convey an important quality of Christ's that we should try to imitate.  Yet, He also states, that though He was a peaceful man, His ministry was not to bring peace in this world.  As you read in the quote at the end of "The Beatitudes," Jesus makes it clear that we will be persecuted for our faith.

(Matthew 10:16-20 & 34-36) Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. But beware of men... But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you."
Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household."

Note that Jesus' advice that we are to be "wise as serpents and harmless as doves."  Again, there is nothing wrong with standing up for yourself, and being wise enough how to handle harmful people, but we are to be gentle when we deal with them.  The sad part about that scripture is that Jesus even warns us that there may be division among our own family members.  But Jesus goes on to say in this same chapter that we are to choose a life of Truth with Him even over our own family, if necessary.  Sadly, sometimes distancing ourselves from friends and family that are always antagonistic is a more peaceful solution than continuing to live in strife.

(Matthew 10:37-40) "He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me."

The beginning of the below verses is essentially saying that, even if we have love in our hearts, if we treat others with disrespect and bad attitudes, we are no better than a noisy hypocrite.  We should strive to not just be hearers of the Word, but doers as well.

(1 Corinthians 13:1-7) Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity [love], I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

I want to be a gentle person who treats others with respect.  I want to let insults fall of my back like water off a duck.  I want to reflect the Light of Christ.  I know I will never be perfect, and I will often make mistakes, but it is my goal to be a peacemaker.  Not because I am seeking a blessing, but because I want to make my Heavenly Father pleased with my effort.  Without Christ I struggle with patience and kind words.  But with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, I can see others in a different light and want to treat them as He would.

Christians are to continue to grow in their faith, which also means living a life that reflects the Words of Christ.  That is why it is so important to never stop reading the Bible, no matter how many years you have been reading it.  You will always be encouraged and reminded of the type of person Christ wants you to be.

(Colossians 3:12-13) Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

Hopefully, this is all making sense.  I will end with a few more scriptures.

(Romans 14:19) Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.

(Ephesians 6:4) And, ye [parents], provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

(Romans 12:17-21) Recompense to no man evil for evil... If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath... Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink... Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
