The Seven Churches of Revelation, Part 6: Philadelphia

(Revelation 3:7) And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith He that is holy, He that is true, He that hath the key of David, He that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;

I love the picturesque descriptions of Jesus at the beginning of each of the messages to the seven churches.  Read that above verse again (I must have read it a dozen times), it is so... oh, the word beautiful does not begin to explain it, maybe majestic would be the right word here.  Jesus is Holy and True, and His powerful authority is final!  

I love the scripture verses in the Bible that mention the beauty of His holiness. Here is just one verse: 

(1 Chronicles 16:28-29) Give unto the Lord, ye kindreds of the people, give unto the Lord glory and strength. Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name... come before Him: worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

The key of David represents the ultimate authority of Jesus Christ on earth as well as in His eternal Kingdom.  No one has the power to open or close what the King of Kings has ordered opened or closed.  Yes, we all have a free will and therefore we can go against His plans, but you very well may risk suffering the consequences of going against His will.  

Whenever I am praying for a certain situation, such as a job interview, I pray that only the doors God wants open or closed will be as He chooses.  I trust in His perfect will, and I often pray something along the lines of "Dear Jesus, please do not let any person, or unseen principality or power, or circumstance open or close whatever doors you want open or closed."  Even when I do not understand or agree with His choice, I will respect it.  Usually.  Less than a month ago, I had a job interview but did not get the job.  In desperation, I was going to contact the company and beg for the job.  But as I was debating what to say to the boss, I very clearly heard Jesus ask me, "Why are you trying to kick down the door I closed shut?" Indeed, I had prayed that above prayer before and after the interview, and I had to trust the company's rejection was God-ordained.  I humbly apologized to God for questioning His infinite knowledge and made peace that God had closed the door for a specific reason.   

(Revelation 3:8-11) I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

Here again is the truth mentioned to each church that all of our good and bad works are seen!

Similar to the opening verse, there is mention of a door that Jesus has opened. In this case, I believe this is a door that was opened as a reward for His people.  He says they have little strength but have still managed to keep the commandments of Jesus and not denied His name.  What door did Jesus open for them?  Was it for financial success? Possibly, but not necessarily as it mentions they had little strength.  How could an entire church be physically weak?  Therefore, logic here says they were either poor or lacked in strength due to the wide-spread religious opposition of Christians during that time period. I like to think that the door mentioned here is not related to temporal success, but the door of salvation for them because they were faithful.  You will notice that Philadelphia is the only one of the seven churches that does not have a negative statement against them, so it makes sense that Jesus was pleased enough with this church to remind them of His open door to Heaven.

In fact, Jesus is so pleased with His faithful servants that He says He loves them and that the false believers will worship at the feet of His loyal followers.  Now, I personally have zero desire to have anyone worship me, but I am sure this is not a spiritual worship, as no one should worship anyone but The Holy Trinity. This is more symbolic of the church being shown respect for their beliefs.  

Verse 10 above can seem confusing as it sounds as if Jesus is saying He will protect them during the Tribulation at the end of time and we know this was written way before now, probably around AD 95.  But yes, "the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth," does indeed refer to the soon-coming Tribulation period. Therefore, this is a future promise for all of those who are just like the people of the church of Philadelphia: faithful in spite of limitations and in spite of persecutions.  When we follow the instructions, God has laid throughout the Bible, we too can we kept safe during the tribulation period.  I know I gave you this not too long ago, but here again is a link to multiple writings on the timing of the rapture: https://thankful-julie.blogspot.com/2026/08/our-king-of-all-kings-is-coming-soon.html

Jesus reminds them that He is coming quickly, which again is more for us ready today than thousands of years ago, but all believers in all time periods were and are wise to watch and wait for His second coming!  When we are more aware of how close this will be, hopefully it will cause us to be in more earnest examination of our souls.  Time is very, very short.  Not everyone will make it to the end of the end of this world as there has been and will continue to be an increase in violence, wars, and disasters.  We are not meant to live in fear, but in prayerful examination of our lives, and hopeful anticipation of seeing Jesus! 

As it is stated in verse 11, Jesus wants us to "hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown."  In other words, we need to respect our salvation, lest we lose it. 

Here are a few more verses on obtaining Heavenly crowns (see also 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 & Philippians 4:1).

(2 Timothy 2:5) And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.

(James 1:12) Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. 

The message of these verses is clear: stand fast in the Lord, strive lawfully (this does not mean legalistically), endure temptation, and you will receive a crown of righteousness.  Stray away from the Lord and holiness, and you will be cast away.

But with all that said, I look forward to casting my crown at His nail-pierced feet! 

(Revelation 3:12-13) Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Jesus speaks again promises for those who overcome sin in their lives.  We are promised eternal life and we will never be ejected from Heaven!  

Here again are beautiful verses that speak of new names.  First, we learned of the new name given to us on a white stone (mentioned in Revelation 2:17, see part 3 of this series), and now new name for Jesus!  This is one of those intriguing verses I love.  Revelation 19 says that Jesus has a name that only He knows! (Revelation 19:11-13 - And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.)

The Seven Churches of Revelation, Part 5: Sardis

(Revelation 3:1) And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars;

Just as in Revelation 1:16 and 2:1, Jesus is again being described as having seven stars.  We learned in Revelation 1:20 that "The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches."  But what are the seven spirits of God mentioned here?  I can tell you that I read several articles on this and none of them agreed! The best thing to always do is to seek out scriptures (more than man's opinions) for the answers.  

Revelation 1:4 mentions "seven Spirits which are before His [God's] throne." Revelation 4:5 says, "there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God." and Revelation 5:6 says, "And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne... stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth."

To explore further, I am also using Isaiah 11. This chapter is a Messianic prophecy foretelling the coming of Jesus as a human as well as a future prophecy describing Heaven and then possibly the end-times. Please read the entire chapter as it is very beautiful.  

(Isaiah 11:1-2) And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: [This is describing Jesus Christ]. And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; 

We know the Holy Trinity consists of the Father God, Jesus the Son, & The Holy Spirit, but the verses in Revelation and Isaiah also show us that God is not limited to just the three manifestations.  There are also seven more spirits that are a part of God that assist with His Holy order.  Although Isaiah gives us some knowledge, I do not believe that on this side of Heaven we can fully know and understand these seven other spirits, as many things of God are a mystery.  However, just knowing they exist is enough.  We do not always have to over-analyze or try to over-explain every Heavenly creature as that would be impossible.  We just need to trust and believe that they are all there for our spiritual guidance in all areas such as knowledge and correction, as well as being there for our protection.

Isaiah also very wisely tells us in 55:9, that we cannot fully comprehend the mind of God, "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my [God] ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts." Which we can apply to trying to understand every single heavenly mystery.  Again, just trust God's Heaven is in perfect working order for all of our benefits, and that someday we will see it all for ourselves and marvel at it all! 

Afterall, 1 Corinthians even tells us we cannot fully understand Heaven from this side: "Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him." Amen!  We have so much to look forward to and won't it be amazing to discover it all!

(Revelation 3:1-4) I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. 

Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. 

Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white: for they are worthy.

The above verses are pretty vital! God sees all of our works, and He recognizes when we are spiritually dead. He says they have a name, which could mean they call themselves Christians, but are not living as such, and are yes, dead in their sins.  Yes, He knows when we are Christians in name only, but not in our deeds.

(Matthew 15:7-8) "Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, 'This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.'"

Jesus encourages the church of Sardis (as well as us) to strengthen what good works they possess because if they continue to backslide, they will indeed perish in their dead works.

He reminds them that they were given the knowledge of salvation, but to hold onto that precious gift, they must repent before they die.

(Romans 6:23) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

He speaks of His second coming and says if they remain in sin, they will be taken unaware when He comes again.  This is important to note that Jesus will only seem like a thief in the night to those who are not spiritually aware.  Those who do not study the Bible on their own but only rely on what others tell them the Bible says as well as those still playing games in the world and not getting serious about eternity.  

You can see in 1 Thessalonians that Paul says those who are living in the Light of Jesus are those who will recognize when Jesus' second coming is almost here. We will not be taken unaware when we have studied our Bible and will understand the signs.  No one can know the exact date, of course (see Matthew 24:36), but we can be sure of when it is very close.  

(1 Thessalonians 5:2, 4-6) For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.  But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore, let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

Jesus then acknowledges the Christians who have honored Him with clean lifestyles.  Those will walk with Him in white only because He has made them worthy! Praise God!

Jesus is looking for a holy people who do their very best not to tarnish their earthly garments.  Only when we walk down paths of right living will we be able to exchange these clothes for the beautiful robes of Heaven!

(Luke 13:23-24) Then said one unto him, "Lord, are there few that be saved?" And He said unto them, "Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able."

Only the blood of Jesus can truly wash our garments white as we cannot save ourselves.  Ephesians mentions that we are also washed clean through His holy baptism:

(Ephesians 5:25-27) Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it; That He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That He might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

(Revelation 3:5-6) He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the Book of Life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Again, Jesus is referencing white clothing for the pure in heart that have overcome sin.  Even more beautiful than new clothing is the next phrase in verse 5.  When we continue to stay clean and pure before a holy God, He will not blot our names out of His Book of Life!  Jesus will stand before God and the angels and declare us ready to enter eternity! Do you think He will announce us with the new name that was written on the white stone mentioned in Revelation 2:17 (see part 3 of this series)?

There is nothing wrong with ambitious career goals, but no other Book will be more important in your life. The Guiness Book of World Records, some list in some kind of hall of fame, or some other important place you want to see your name written (sorry, I am coming up empty with examples), those books and places will not exist when God creates a new earth and new heaven (see Revelation 21:1).  Having your name in God's Book for His eternal glory should be your biggest goal.  

Now on the opposite side, remember how very important it is to stand up for Jesus. For His own words tell us:

(Matthew 10:32-33) "Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven."  

I choose the former, to confess God before all people, even when it is unpopular or even dangerous.  I would much rather be rejected by people who dislike what I have to say than sent away from the Kingdom God because I refused to stand up for Jesus!

If you are unsure of what actions will keep you out of the Book of Life:

(Revelation 21:7-8 & 27) He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

(Revelation 20:11-15) And I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away... And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Now let's end this on a positive note!  Jesus wants us all to succeed spiritually.  He gives us plenty of warnings to know where we are going wrong, shows us what rules to follow that will please Him, and He forgives us when we repent of our sins!  Praise God for His mercy and grace and praise God that the Holy Spirit will give you the strength and courage to walk in His ways of holiness so you can receive a new name and a white robe!

The Seven Churches of Revelation, Part 4: Thyatira

(Revelation 2:18) And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass;

That is a powerful description of Jesus. In Revelation 1:14-15 John also describes Jesus as having eyes like fire and feet like brass.

Before all my writings, I pray the Holy Spirit helps guide my words, and when I read this, I thought of being refined in the holy fire of God.

(Zechariah 13:9) And I will bring [them] through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, "It is my people": and they shall say, "The Lord is my God."

(Isaiah 48:10) Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.

(1 Peter 1:7) That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

May each of us have a desire to allow God to purge and purify us in His holy fire.  Yes, the fires of God's judgments and trials may seem intense, but what an honor to be counted worthy enough to be put through this Holy Fire that burns away all that is unholy so that we can be purified!  What an overwhelming and humbling honor!  We should not shy away from such trials, but pray we are counted to pass through His refining fire where we can give God all the glory and praise when we pass the fiery tests of this life!  May we count it all joy to have our faith and actions tested. (see James 1:2-4)  

(Revelation 2:19) I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.

Jesus acknowledges the positive fact that the people of Thyatira display good works of helping those in need as well as their faith.  Jesus is very pleased with us when we take care of one another.  We do not have to have the financial means to help others as we can serve with our time and especially our prayers.  Makes me think of the book of James.  

(James 2:14-20) What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, "Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled;" notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

(Revelation 2:20-25) Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols. And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not. Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden. But that which ye have already hold fast till I come.

I will do my best to sum up the above set of verses, but there is a lot that can be said about those who are accepting of or are involved with a Jezebel spirit.

The prophetess this church accepted was not Jezebel herself as she had been dead for quite some time, but she was an unnamed woman who had the same evil spirit as Jezebel. Perhaps she had the same name as her predecessor, but I am not sure. This woman not only led the people into pagan rituals but also encouraged sexual immorality. 

Who was the first Jezebel? To say she was an evil queen in the day of Elijiah would be an understatement.  She worshiped false gods (particularly Baal), endorsed the false prophets and priests, and persecuted the genuine prophets of the One True God. After Elijah had her false priests executed, she sought to kill him as well, but he went into hiding (if interested, you can read a brief account about Elijah here: https://thankful-julie.blogspot.com/2024/02/profile-of-doubter-part-2-elijah.html ).  God spared Eljah's life, but Jezebel had at least one man, Naboth, killed just the sake of power and property (she wanted his vineyard for her husband King Ahab).  

So you see, for Jesus to say Thyatira was evil because they were seeped in rebellious practices and spiritual adultery is pretty serious.  You can read how angry Jesus was with their wicked acceptance of false gods, particularly the god Apollo.  

Very similar to the church Pergamos in part 3 in that some had faith but refused to obey God and instead lived to please their flesh. Therefore, I am going to repeat 2 Corinthians 6 as it is so very important to God that we not mix Christianity with ANY false religion. We are not called to be one happy ecumenical mess; we are called to separate from false religions, not hold hands with those who refuse to follow the Truths of Jesus Christ.

(2 Corinthians 6:14-18- 7:1) Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate," saith the Lord, "and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.  

The Bible often compares following false religions to committing spiritual adultery, and we know that no adulterer will inherit the kingdom of Heaven (Galatians 5:19 & 21- Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness... and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.)

Verse 25 ends with Jesus praising those who do not dwell in the same depths as Satanic followers and encourages them to hold fast to their faith in Him. No, it may not be easy, but Jesus will be our courage and strength.  Jesus is all we need and is worth every rejection and perscecution we face when we choose The Holy Trinity over the world.     

(Revelation 2:26-29) And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. And I will give him the morning star. 

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

There are rewards to those who overcome sin and the temptations to live like the world.  He will gift us the power of authority in His name.   

I had to ask my husband what "I will give him the morning star," meant as I was unsure by this statment as I think of Jesus as the Morning Star.  Mel explained that we will be glorified and shine like the stars in Heaven when Jesus Christ gives us new bodies.  Mel has even had a vision of the overcomers in heaven being clothed in bright garments. Praise God!

Jesus wants all of us to hear these messages to all the churches.

The Seven Churches of Revelation, Part 3: Pergamos

(Revelation 2:12) And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith He which hath the sharp sword with two edges;

Just as we read John's description of Jesus in Revelation 1:16, Jesus is again described as having a two-edged sword. I am sure your mind went to Hebrews 4 as mine did.  I usually prefer the KJV, but I really like the amplified version for these verses.

(Hebrews 4:12-13) For the word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective]. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of the soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart. And not a creature exists that is concealed from His sight, but all things are open and exposed, and revealed to the eyes of Him with whom we have to give account.

We may think of these verses as the sword representing the Bible and how we can and should measure our actions against it.  Yes, this is so true, but how much more so is The Word Himself (John 1:1 -In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.).  He examines not only our actions, but also our motivations behind those actions.  Are we doing right or kind things to earn His favor, to make ourselves look righteous, or simply because we love God and want to please Him?  This brings us again to the phrase below in verse 13, that all of our works are known by the only One who will judge us accurately as well as fairly. 

(Psalm 7:8-9) The Lord shall judge the people: judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is in me. Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins [the innermost parts of our hearts and minds].  

Praise God!  Can we say anyone else will judge us with righteousness?  How many quickly dismiss us when we make mistakes?  But God is gracious to judge us as individuals and gives us grace based on many different factors in our lives.  Don't be fooled, that is not an excuse to sin (See Romans 6:1-2), but instead it is a reason to honor the King of Kings with loyalty and right living.    

(Revelation 2:13) I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.

Yes, you will see those first 4 words (in verse 13) to every church in Revelation.  I expounded more on it in part 1, and you can read those verses there.  Added to knowing our works, Jesus says He knows where we dwell.  We could say this means He understands our circumstances and therefore has compassion for what we go through.  But this also means Jesus knows when we go to places we should not dare to go.  He is always watching.  

In the case of the church in Pergamos, they were in an evil place that was seeped in paganism, including having a huge altar or throne to Zeus that was pretty prominent.  The city was also full of moral comprise.  Jesus not only was pleased with the church in Pergamos for resisting such influences but also expects the same from us.  Do not take 2 Corinthians 6 lightly, but see it as a very real warning; you will see how it ties in to Revelation 2:14-16 as well. 

(2 Corinthians 6:14-18- 7:1) Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate," saith the Lord, "and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

(Revelation 2:14-16) But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication. So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes, which thing I hate. Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. 

You see how 2 Corinthians also applies to the issues Jesus has against Pergamos and all of us who choose to follow false religions/immoral practices or closely align with those involved with such?

Unlike the church in Ephesus (part 1), where Jesus was pleased with them for hating the practice of the Nicolaitanes, this church is the opposite.

I will be honest; I do not see how this church could take a stand against the doctrines of Satanic paganism and yet be accepting of the Nicolaitanes who were also said to be immoral and involved with false idolatries.  Then again, sounds like so many people today.  They may say they would never worship Satan, and yet have no problems with celebrating Halloween, watching programs/reading books full of witchcraft (Cartoons full of witches, spells, curses, and false gods are not innocent just because they are animated!), view pornography, go to bars, have sex outside of marriage, smoke so-called harmless drugs, etc.  Many Christians today are just like the church in Pergamos who took a stand for Christ in some areas, but hugely compromised in others.  

(1 Corinthians 10:21) Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

These are not minor issues to God. Don't believe me, notice the list in Revelation 21 (See also Galatians 5:19-21):

(Revelation 21:8) But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers [This includes rebelliously allowing occult books/movies into your home], and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Notice, Jesus tells them He will fight against them and quickly use His sword against them unless they repent.  We need to take His messages seriously.  He gives us warning after warning, so we have time to change our actions and return to Him. (2 Peter 3:9 - The Lord is... longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.)  There will be a day when the warnings will end, and we will be held accountable for ignoring the gracious lifeline He so desperately longs for us grasp onto.

But remember, Jesus is always so very gracious to forgive us each and every single time we repent. Don't waste time, turn away from sin today! 

(1 John 1:9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Prasie God for His infinite mercy!

(Revelation 2:17) He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

If we have ears, Jesus wants us all to apply this message to our lives.

This last part about the rewards that are gifted to those who overcome sin is so beautifully intriguing! I don't know the exact implication of this verse, but could Jesus Himself be our hidden manna (our Bread of Life) as He will no longer be hidden from us when we go to Heaven? We will see Him face to face as He really is and we will feast at the Father's table of eternal life! Not really sure that is what was intended here, but it is a profoundly hopeful and joyful picture.  

This also makes me think of the song by C. Austin Miles, "There's a new name written down in glory, and it's mine, yes it's mine. I've met the Author of my story, and He's mine, yes He's mine."

So fascinating and beautiful to think of receiving a white stone with a new name.  Makes me feel emotional just thinking about it.  I picture having a private talk with Jesus as He hands me my stone.  Goodness, makes we weep!  How beautiful that day will be!

The Seven Churches of Revelation, Part 2: Smyrna

(Revelation 2:8) And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; "These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive.'

Praise King Jesus; He is alive!  Jesus willingly endured a horrible death for our salvation, ascended into Hell to preach to the souls there, and then rose again, so we can have eternal life with The Holy Trinity in a forever Paradise!   

(Philippians 2:5-11) ...Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

(1 Corinthians 15:3-4) For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

(1 Peter 3:18-22) For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison... The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

(Revelation 2:9 'I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.'

In part 1, I listed several scriptures that show that we will be held accountable for our works, so I will not post them again for each part of this series, but if you need a reminder, you can go back to part 1 and re-read them or do a Bible verse search on the phrase "according to works."  And again, I do not believe we can ever earn our salvation, as it is only by the blood of Jesus, not by rituals or empty religions that can save our souls. 

God not only sees our works, but also our struggles.  He says here that He sees tribulations and poverty. In this life we will struggle in most every area, through loss of loved ones, health issues, persecutions to varying degrees, as well as some of us may also struggle financially.  God does not always make a way out of our tribulations, but He will give us the strength to endure. Jesus often reminds me that in my times of physical struggles, He is holding my hand to offer comfort and strength. (2 Corinthians 12:9-10 - And He said unto me, "My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.")  

Some may get angry with God for not rescuing them, but we need to remember that some things must be endured to fulfill a certain purpose for ourselves or others, we may be being tested to see how much faith we have, we may be lacking in morality and therefore blocking God's rescue, or we just simply live in a fallen world and bad things happen.  Regardless of the reasons, please try not to blame God, but focus on the bigger, eternal picture of hope.

(John 16:33) "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."

Yes, I know, finding "cheer" in the middle of a storm is not always easy, but someday, if we choose to accept the free gift of salvation and continue down paths of holiness (Luke 13:23-24 - Then said one unto Him, "Lord, are there few that be saved?" And He said unto them, "Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able."), the troubles of this world will all be over, and the bad times will either all make sense or they simply won't matter at all!

(Revelation 7:16-17) They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes. 

Because I wanted to write this in the true context of what Jesus meant when He acknowledges that people of Smyrna were in poverty, but then says, "but thou art rich." I am going to touch on history a bit, even though I said I wouldn't.  Smyrna was a prosperous city, but the true Christians were poor due to refusing to follow the ways of the false Roman religion.  Therefore, they were persecuted and socially excluded so it was difficult for them to prosper.  When Jesus says they are rich, in this case He means they were rich spiritually because they chose to take a stand against the false cults.  May we also always be brave enough to risk even our financial situation rather than compromise our walk with Jesus!  If the only way to make money is to serve a false god (or to make money in a corrupt or dishonest manner), then it is better to be poor rather than lose your soul.  Eternal riches are worth so much more than the temporal ones!

(Mark 8:36) For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? 

(Matthew 6:19-21) Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

The message then goes on to call out the blasphemy of those who pretend to be believers but are indeed NOT following the True gospel. Although the term "Jews" is used here, remember we are under a NEW covenant and in this case, Jews can mean anyone who is a True follower of Jesus Christ. There are plenty of people who pretend to serve the Lord but refuse to give up worldly ways, are only playing the part of a spiritual person to look holy, or are just simply pretending to be a Christian for the sake of fame, power, and positive attention. But make no mistake, you may fool a few or a lot of people, but you can NEVER fool God; He sees all that is in your heart. 

(Mark 7:6-9) He answered and said unto them, "Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition."

(Matthew 7:22-23) "Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."

(Revelation 2:10) 'Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.'

To apply this to our lives, there will be a time in the very near future where those who refuse to go into hiding during the tribulation (or don't have time to hide) will be persecuted.  Those who faithfully take a stand against the mark of the Beast may be martyred. I am not sure why this verse specifically mentions 10 days, but I do know that all those in the past, present, and future who will die for the sake of the gospel will receive a reward in Heaven for such a sacrifice.   

(Revelation 6:9-11) ...I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held... And white robes were given unto every one of them;

(Revelation 7:13-14) And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, "What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?" And I said unto him, "Sir, thou knowest." And he said to me, "These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb."

(Revelation 2:11) 'He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.'"

As I mentioned in part 1, Jesus wants all of us to hear these messages.  When we overcome living in the dark sins of life and choose the Light of Jesus, we will be spared the death of hell.

The Seven Churches of Revelation, Part 1: Ephesus

I was not sure what to write about next, but as I was scrolling through my homepage on my ministry's Facebook page, I saw three different artwork images created that listed the seven churches in Revelation.  I knew I had my answer. I know this is a topic that had been written on probably thousands of times, but I cannot assume the three postings from pages I do not even follow, as a mere coincidence.  I know many people have probably done a better job writing on this subject, but this is my humble commentary.  (Here are part 1 and 2 of my husband's excellent writings on the 7 churches: https://thankful-julie.blogspot.com/2026/04/revelation-21-29-seven-churches-part.html & https://thankful-julie.blogspot.com/2026/04/revelation-31-22-seven-churches-part.html )

This is not a deep historical dive into each church, but I am mostly going to be showing us how we can apply each message to our own lives. 

(Revelation 2:1) Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks.

Let's go back to chapter 1. When John begins reporting his revelation from God, he tells us his description of Jesus.  Chapter 1 is too long to list here, but please read the entire chapter on your own.  Here is a brief excerpt from John's description (or you can read Revelation 1:1-20 here from my Bible Journal https://thankful-julie.blogspot.com/2025/05/revelation-11-20.html )

(Revelation 1:10-16) I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Saying, "I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea." And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

Such a beautiful and majestic description!  You will see in chapter 2 that he also mentions the 7 stars and 7 candlesticks.  In verse 20, Jesus explains this:

(Revelation 1:20) The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches. 

Now we will explore these 7 churches one at a time.

(Revelation 2:2) 'I know thy works..."

You will notice that to each and every church Jesus states, "I know thy works."  No, our works can never earn our salvation, but our works very much do matter and all we do is being observed and recorded.  We will all be accountable for our works.  

(Romans 14:10-11) For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written, "As I live," saith the Lord, "every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God."   

(Proverbs 24:12) Doth not He that pondereth the heart consider it? and He that keepeth thy soul, doth not He know it? and shall not He render to every man according to his works?

(Ecclesiastes 12:14) For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

I don't mean to dwell on the judgment issue, but I believe that if more people really comprehended the fact that we will all be judged for all our actions, we would be so much more careful in our choices, so here are just two more:

(Matthew 16:27) [Jesus said], "For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works."

(Revelation 20:12-13) And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

Now back to Revelation, chapter 2.

(Revelation 2:2) 'I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.'

Jesus loves to report the good things He sees in people because He wants so much for each of us to succeed in our spiritual walk with the Holy Trinity.  (2 Peter 3:9 - The Lord... is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.) He wants to encourage us to serve Him with all of our hearts. mind, and strength.  He will uphold us when no one else stands by us.  He will be our Champion and cheer us on when everyone else is trying to drag us down.  He will be our strength and help us go against the flow of an immoral world. (Romans 12:1-2 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.)

For the church of Ephesus, Jesus is pleased with their labor and patience.  He mentions their labor twice.  It can be very difficult to labor for the cause of Christ.  Finances, bad health, and
 lack of other resources can make it hard. However, God does not want our excuses why we cannot serve Him but is very pleased when we just get in there and serve Him in whatever ability we posses.  Have you heard this song written by Kittie L. Suffield: "Little is much when God is in it? Labor not for wealth or fame; There's a crown and you can win it, If you go in Jesus' name."?  So true.  But may we seek more to lay our crown at His feet than to seek our own glory.

It is often difficult to find patience when we endure trials (Romans 5:3-4- And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope:) as well as being patient with others when they exasperate us (1 Timothy 6:11 -But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.).  As I mentioned above, this series is not a historical documentary, but more of a personal one for each of us.  Therefore, I do not know what type of patience Jesus was referring to in reference to the Ephesians, but we can be certain, that both types of patience please the Lord.

There are so many ways we can choose to stand against evil.  It can be in the forms of injustice or moral issues.  In this case Jesus says here that He is pleased with those whose intolerance of evil is exposing the false apostles as liars.  Some people may get angry when a True follower of Jesus points out a false belief or heretical spiritual leader, but as long as it is done with tact and in order to help open the eyes of others, it is what Jesus would like us to do.  We do not want to turn a blind eye when we see millions following a false preacher or false messiah. (Ephesians 5:11 - And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. & Matthew 15:14 -They be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.)

(Revelation 2:4-5) 'Nevertheless, I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.'

Verses 4-5 are enough to convince me that eternal security is false doctrine (although there are many other verses in the Bible that also say the same).  When we fall away from our First Love, our walk with Jesus Christ, our candlestick can be removed out of heaven.  But the great news is that Jesus gives each and every one of us a chance to fix our mistakes.  When we repent and repeat our first works (dedicating our life to God, asking for forgiveness of sins, possibly even another baptism), He will take us back! (Revelation 2:6) 'But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitanes, which I also hate.'

Jesus again points out a positive quality the Ephesians possess. He again recognizes and appreciates that they hated sinful practices.  We should emulate this attitude. (Romans 12:9 - Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.)

To quickly sum up the deeds of the Nicolaitanes (Nicolaitans, in other version) that Jesus hated, they were full of idolatrous compromise and sexual immorality, which they justified by a distorted teaching that perverted grace into a license to sin. (1 Corinthians 10:14 - Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. & 2 Timothy 2:22 - Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.)

(Revelation 2:7) "He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God." 

This last verse to the church of Ephesus is exactly why I want to share all 7 messages of the churches so we can see how we can relate.  Because Jesus wants all of us to hear these messages.

To overcome means we have overcome sin in our lives.  Not that any of us will ever be perfect, of course, but that we can overcome temptations to sin and conquer our fleshly desires to please Jesus.  When we choose the plan of salvation and continue to walk in ways of holiness, we too we be able to eat of the tree of life in God's eternal paradise!  

(1 John 5:3-4) For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and His commandments are not grievous. For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world.
